The fresco decorates a wall of Pope Julius II's private library and gathers the philosophers of antiquity beneath the vaults of an imaginary temple. At the centre Plato points to the sky while Aristotle turns his palm toward the earth. Around them are Socrates, Pythagoras, Euclid bending with compasses and Diogenes sprawled on the steps. Raphael was only twenty-six, and he gave the ancients the faces of his contemporaries: Plato resembles Leonardo, Euclid the architect Bramante, and the painter himself peers out from the right edge.
